Success Story of Beekeeping under STRY skill training

Name of the farmer : Hramlianchunga

District : Lawngtlai

State : Mizoram

In spite of major role of Beekeeping in crop productivity improvement and income generation, this enterprise was not accepted as commercial source of income by the farmers in rural areas of Mizoram. In every village, at least some of the farmers are interested in Beekeeping and reared honey bee by their own method i.e traditional method of Beekeeping. It is very much important for the farmers to learn the technique of modern beekeeping for enhancing farmers income as well as for the safety of honey bee population, and for these reasons, motivating farmers by conducting training is very much necessary for the farmers of Lawngtlai district.

Farmer's Background

Mr. Hramlianchunga S/O Lianthuana, Sentetfiang village, Lawngtlai district is a humble farmer from Lawngtlai district, Mizoram. He is having small land holding where he also grown some fruit trees. His wife is getting government job with little amount of salary which is not enough to support the need of 7 family members. He is also rearing honey bees by traditional methods with about 40 bee hives around their house. He used to earned handsome amount of 1 lakh Rupees from Beekeeping during harvesting time once in a year. Other than Beekeeping, he is also getting income from fruits and other product in his small orchard. Life is not that easy for a farmer like him to feed five children in a modern world. They always struggled for running the family needs and working very hard.

Training & Motivation

He is having a very good experience in traditional Beekeeping method but he always wanted to improve his skill. After hearing about Modern Beekeeping method he was very eager to learn Modern Beekeeping method by using modern Bee Box. In case of traditional Beekeeping, almost all the larvae are killed during honey harvesting and generally honey can be harvested once in a year. But In modern beekeeping method, only honey is harvested and there is no harm for the larvae. Honey can be harvested during harvesting season for 2-3 times in a year. He was very happy to get an opportunity to participated in 7 days training programme conducted by KVK Lawngtlai under STRY, the component implemented under SMAE by the Ministry. He was also introduced to different aspects of modern Beekeeping methods alongwith practical demonstration during training session through the program conducted on "BEE KEEPING” during 13.12.2021 – 19.12.2021 by KVK Lawngtlai, Mizoram in association with State Agriculture Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Aizawl, Mizoram and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad.

Socio-economic impact of program

  • The Skill based training program helped Mr. Hramlianchunga to acquire knowledge and skill required for Modern Beekeeping techniques which encouraged him to take up Beekeeping as a supplementary income generating activity.

  • Before training, he was able to generate an income of not more than Rs. 1.0 lakh annually. The implementation of various skills acquired during the training helped him generate an income of more than Rs 2.625 lakhs per year from the Modern technique of Beekeeping.

Contribution of the program

  • Skills learnt during the training program helped him understand the importance of Modern Beekeeping for increasing honey productivity and improved skill by using modern bee box.

  • Avoided Mass killing of Larvae of honey bee during honey harvest in case of modern Beekeeping method.

Influence on other Farmers

  • By observing the income and passion of Mr. Hramlianchunga, other farmers from that locality are also interested in taking up of Beekeeping like him. He has emerged as a role model for local farmer in production of honey as a good supplementary income and is considered as an example in the region.

  • He shared his knowledge with about 50 farmers from his village and is also contributing by participating in training of KVK, within Lawngtlai district.
